  8. OVERVIEW
  9.  
  10. Unitype Global Writer is a multilingual editor with document support 
  11. for most of the world's languages. Global Writer is based on the 
  12. Unicode 2.0 character set standard.
  13.  
  14. The primary value of Global Writer is in enabling users to create or 
  15. edit documents in their own language, or to enter or display text in 
  16. other languages they may be familiar with, and freely 
  17. mix any language within the same document.
  18.  
  19. Global Writer does not automatically translate documents, but it does 
  20. contain a multilingual thesaurus feature.  Using this feature, you can 
  21. build and manage your own translation dictionaries.

  23. The User Interface language for this release of Global Writer is 
  24. English.

  27. INSTALL & UNINSTALL

  29. Unitype Global Writer is a 32-bit application and requires Microsoft 
  30. Windows 95, Microsoft Windows 98 or Microsoft Windows NT 4.0.  
  31. Machine requirements are:
  32. - 12MB RAM minimum.  16MB or more RAM is recommended, especially if 
  33.   support for CJK (Chinese, Japanese, Korean) is installed.
  34. - 4MB to 130MB available hard disk space.  The exact amount depends 
  35.   on the number and type of languages installed.

  37. To install Unitype Global Writer, launch setup.exe and follow the 
  38. configuration options in the installation program.  
  39.  
  40. To remove Global Writer from your system, go to the Windows Control 
  41. Panel, "Add / Remove Programs" and choose Unitype Global Writer.

  44. UNICODE

  46. Global Writer's primary character set is the Unicode 2.0 character 
  47. encoding standard.  Unicode is a fixed-width 16-bit character set 
  48. that covers most of the world's commonly used writing systems.

  53. SUPPORTED FILE FORMATS
  54.  
  55. Global Writer supports three file formats: Unitype Global Writer 
  56. (*.UW), Text Only (*.TXT), and HTML (*.HTM). The default mode for 
  57. Global Writer is the *.UW file format.  Staying with this format is 
  58. recommended for standard product use.  Text Only and HTML are 
  59. advanced formats (at least in a multi-lingual product like Global 
  60. Writer) and are only recommended for technically advanced users.

  62. UW document files can easily store all of the formatting and language 
  63. attributes offered by the Global Writer product.  UW files are a 
  64. unique document format, and cannot be read by other products.  If you 
  65. intend to transmit data to users of other products, you should use 
  66. Text Only.

  68. Text Only (*.TXT) files are plain text with no formatting.  
  69. Although it is not very attractive to look at, an advantage of Text 
  70. Only is that it is very portable without having to worry as 
  71. much about incompatibilities with current or future products.  
  72. However, a disadvantage for multi-language Text Only documents 
  73. compared to UW documents is that there is no tracking of language 
  74. attributes.  To display Text Only accurately, the user may need to 
  75. manually select the appropriate language in the target application.

  78. COMPATIBILITY WITH OTHER PRODUCTS

  80. The Unicode character set has been adopted by Microsoft in their 
  81. Office 97 product.  Global Writer can cut and paste data directly to 
  82. Microsoft Office and other Windows-based applications, if 
  83. the target application can accept data in that language (for example, 
  84. cut/paste works in Russian but not Tibetan).

  86. Global Writer is not compatible with version 1.x products from Gamma 
  87. Productions due to changes in the language support system, with the 
  88. exception that both company's products are compatible at the Unicode

  93. - ISSUES AND LIMITATIONS

  95. HP LaserJet printer drivers and CJK languages
  96. There is a known incompatibility between Hewlett-Packard LaserJet 
  97. printer drivers and CJK on Microsoft Windows 95.  The conflict causes 
  98. Chinese, Japanese, and Korean (CJK) language characters to print 
  99. incorrectly or not at all.  This problem can be solved by choosing the 
  100. Print TrueType as graphics option under File/Print/Properties/Fonts 
  101. before printing.  If the above option is not available with your 
  102. current printer driver, please install the "HP LaserJet" driver (found 
  103. on the Microsoft Windows 95 distribution CD) and select it before 
  104. printing.

  109. HTML
  110. Global Writer is designed to support only those HTML tags which 
  111. correspond to the document formatting capabilities of the product.  
  112. If an entire HTML tag is not understood by Global Writer, it is 
  113. ignored.  If a portion of a recognized HTML tag is not understood, 
  114. the unrecognized portion will be dropped from that tag.
